Sufiana kalam of Shaikh Sharf ud-din Bu Ali Qalandar Panipati (1209-1324 CE)

manam mehv-e khayal-e ū, nami danam kuja raftam.
shudam gharq-e wisal-e ū, nami danam kuja raftam.

I am lost in thy thoughts, I know not where am I going,
I am drowned in thy union, I know not where am I going.

ghulām-e rū-e ū būdam, asir-e mū-e ū būdam
ghubār-e kū-e ū būdam, nami danam kuja raftam.

I am the slave of thy countenance; I am the prisoner of thy tresses,
I am the dust of thy street, I know not where am I going.

ba ān māh āshnā gashtam, ze jān-o-dil fidā gashtam,
fanā gashtam fanā gashtam, nami danam kuja raftam.

I am so enamoured by that moon (faced), that I have sacrificed my heart and soul,
I have been destroyed, lo! I have been destroyed, I know not where am I going.

shudam chu mubtala-e ū, nehādam sar ba pay-e ū,
shudam mahv-e laqa-e ū, nami danam kuja raftam.

I am absorbed in thee, I have kept my head on thy feet,
I am engrossed gazing at thy face, I know not where am I going.

qalandar bu ali hastam, ba-nām-e dost sarmastam,
dil andar ishq-e-ū bastam, nami danam kuja raftam.

I am Bu Ali Qalandar, I am intoxicated by my beloved’s name,
Inside my heart resides thy love, I know not where I am going.

Sufiana kalam of Hazrat Shah Niyaz Ahmad Qadiri Chishti Barelawi (1742-1834):

Ishq mein tere koh-e gham, sar pe liya, jo ho so ho,
Aish-o-nishat-e zindagi, chhod diya, jo ho so ho.

In thy love, a mountain of sorrows I have chosen, whatever is to happen, may happen,
Pleasure and luxuries of life I have, whatever is to happen, may happen.

Apne to ab nahin rahe, hosh baja, jo ho so ho.

Ask me not, dejected am I, O friends and counsels,
For I am not in my senses, whatever is to happen, may happen.

Mujh se mariz ko tabib, hath tu apna mat laga,
Usko Khuda pe chhod de, behr-e Khuda, jo ho so ho.

A patient like me, O doctor, do not even touch,
Leave him on God, for God’s sake, whatever is to happen, may happen.

Aql ke madrase se uth, ishq ke maikade mein aa,
Jam-e fana-o-zindagi, ab to piya, jo ho so ho.

Leave the school of reason, and come to the tavern of love,
For I have now consumed the cup of death and life, whatever is to happen, may happen.

Laag ki aag lagte hi, pamba namat ye jal gaya
Rakht-e wajud-e jan-o-tan, kuchh na bacha, jo ho so ho.

As soon as he fire of love was kindled, everything got burnt like a cotton pale,
The, body, the soul, the very existence, nothing remained, whatever is to happen, may happen.

Dida-e dil baham hain aik, soojh mein aur boojh mein,
Aankhon ke samne ayan, dil mein basa, jo ho so ho.

Eyes of the heart are mutually one, both in sight and understanding,
While something is before eyes, something else may dwell in heart, whatever is to happen, may happen.

Hijr ki jo musibatein, arz ki uske samne,
Naz-o-ada se muskura, kehne laga, jo ho so ho.

When I narrated the pangs of separation before her,
With eloquence and coquetry, smilingly she said, whatever is to happen, may happen.

Hasti ke is sarab mein, rat ki rat bas rahe,
Subh adam hui numud, paanv utha, jo ho so ho.

May the night continue in this mirage of life,
But now there is dawn, so start off, whatever is to happen, may happen.

Duniya ke nek-o-bad ke kam, hamko ‘Niyaz’ kuchh nahin,
Aap se jo guzar gaya, phir us se kya, jo ho so ho.

I have nothing to do, O ‘Niyaz’, with the good or bad of this world,
For whoever has (sur)passed you, I have nothing to do, whatever is to happen, may happen.

Translation:

Poocha mah se raushan kya?
Bola mera rukhsar hai
Poocha shakar se meetha kya?
Bola meri guftar hai.

Poocha tariq-e zindagi,
Bola wafadari meri,
Maine kaha na zulm kar,
Bola ye mera kar hai.

Poocha achanak maut kya?
Bola mujhse bichhadna aapka,
Poocha ilaj-e zindagi,
Bola mera didar hai.

Poocha ho hoori ya pari?
Bola mein sabka shah hun,
Khusro kaha hun natawan,
Bola mera parastar hai.

Qata': [quartet] with its free translation

Agar mumkin hai banna tera hissa, aansu ban jaun,
Bichhadte waqt bhi ye fakhr ho mujhe khud-nawazi ka,

If I were to be, a part of you,
Let me be thy tear.
Will rise from thy heart,
Will live in thy eyes,
And will shine on eyelids clear.

When time shall come that I must part,
I'll have this thought to boast.
I rolled on thy cheeks, and
Rested on thy lips, and
Found a place to be lost.

dhire dhire machal aye dil-e-beqarar, koi aata hai
yun tadap ke na tadpa mujhe bar bar, koi aata hai

Turn wayward, ah slowly, o my restless heart; Someone is coming
Do not torment me again and again by tormenting yourself; Someone is coming

uske daman ki khushbu hawaon me hai
uske qadmon ki aahat fizaon me hai
mujh ko karne de karne de solah singar, koi aata hai

The fragrance of his apparel is in the air
The sound of his footsteps in the ambiance
Allow me to bedeck myself in sixteen adornments; Someone is coming

dhire dhire machal aye dil-e-bekrar, koi aata hai
dhire dhire machal aye dil-e-bekrar

Turn wayward, ah slowly, o my restless heart; Someone is coming
Do not torment me again and again by tormenting yourself; Someone is coming

mujh ko chhune lagi uski parchhaiyan
dil ke najdik bajti hai shahnaiyan
mere sapnon ke aangan me gata hai pyar, koi aata hai

His shadows have stated touching me
Clarinets have start playing near my heart
Love is singing in the courtyard of my dreams; Someone is coming

dhire dhire machal aye dil-e-bekrar, koi aata hai
dhire dhire machal aye dil-e-bekrar

Turn wayward, ah slowly, o my restless heart; Someone is coming
Do not torment me again and again by tormenting yourself; Someone is coming

ruth ke pahle ji bhar sataungi main
jab manayenge wo man jaungi main
dil pe rahta hai aise me kab ikhtiyar, koi aata hai

First I’ll sulk and tease him to my heart’s content
When he shall flatter, I will give in
Who can have control on thy heart in such situations; Someone is coming

dhire dhire machal aye dil-e-beqarar, koi aata hai
yu tadap ke na tadpa muze bar bar, koi aata ha

dhire dhire machal aye dil-e-beqarar

Turn wayward, ah slowly, o my restless heart; Someone is coming
Do not torment me again and again by tormenting yourself; Someone is coming

Turn wayward, ah slowly, o my restless heart; Someone is coming
