India: Early Human Settlements - Palaeolithic age

India: Early Human Settlements : Palaeolithic Stage

Namaskar and welcome to another episode of History of India.

The oldest period of human existence, called the Paleolithic period, is so called because of the evidence of the use of stone tools by man. Then as these tools grew more refined, we enter into what are called the Middle Paleolithic and the lower Paleolithic periods. We find evidence of human settlements during these periods in Andhra and Karnataka, Maharashtra and Central Madhya Pradesh among others. Besides the evidence of tools, there are also available some cave paintings of the period. One of such sites is Bhimbetka in Madhya Pradesh where we find some 500 painted rock shelters over an area of 10 sq. kms.
